Postdoctoral Position in Salmon Ecology Modeling

#1 Unread post by jfiechter »

The Department of Ocean Sciences at the University of California, Santa Cruz, invites applications for a position of Postdoctoral Scholar to study salmon-predator dynamics along the California Coast with the purpose of developing best management practices relative to juvenile salmon out-migration characteristics. Specific research tasks include implementing and analyzing individual-based model simulations to: (1) evaluate how salmon outmigration characteristics (size, timing and location) relate to spatiotemporal variability in growth and predation risk at sea, and (2) determine the impact of various predators based on their respective foraging strategies (e.g., central place vs. migrating predator) on spatiotemporally-explicit salmon mortality at sea.

The postdoctoral scholar will work under the direct supervision of Prof. Jerome Fiechter and collaborate closely with researchers in the Salmon Ecology Division at NOAA’s Southwest Fisheries Science Center in Santa Cruz.

Desired skills include experience with individual-based models applied to marine ecosystems and familiarity with ocean modeling. Working knowledge of programming languages (Fortran, Python, etc.) and Linux/Unix environment is a plus. Since the postdoctoral scholar will be expected to both lead independent research and work as a team member, willingness for collaboration and demonstrated ability to summarize scientific findings in the form of written manuscripts and oral presentations are also important.

Please see attached announcement for details on application requirements.
