Fourth WMO International Symposium: Assimilation of Observations in Meteorology and Oceanography

The Fourth WMO International Symposium on Assimilation of Observations in Meteorology and Oceanography will be convened 18-22 April 2005 in Prague, Czech Republic. The three previous Symposia were held in Clermont-Ferrand, France (July 1990), in Tokyo, Japan (March 1995), and in Quebec City, Canada (June 1999).

The central goals of the Fourth Symposium are:

(1) To assess recent progress in all aspects of atmospheric/oceanic data assimilation and related disciplines, in both research and operational environments; and

(2) To reach a common understanding of the main challenges and opportunities that lie ahead in atmospheric/oceanic data assimilation.

INVITED SPEAKERS

Will give overviews of problems, progress and prospects in key areas:

Dick Dee, NASA Goddard Space Flight Center, USA
Steven English, Met Office, UK
Michael Fiorino, Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, USA
Anthony Hollingsworth, ECMWF, UK
Peter Houtekamer, Met Service of Canada, Canada
Masafumi Kamachi, Japan Meteorological Agency, Japan
Rolf Langland, Naval Research Laboratory, USA
Dennis McLaughlin, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, USA
Florence Rabier, Meteo-France, France
Detlef Stammer, University of Hamburg, Germany
Juanzhen Sun, National Center for Atmospheric Research, USA
Olivier Talagrand, Laboratoire de Meteorologie Dynamique, France

CALL FOR ABSTRACTS

Submission deadline: 15 OCTOBER 2004
Decisions by: 15 DECEMBER 2004

Contributions are sought for oral and poster presentations on state-of-the-art research and operational developments. Suggested topics include, but are not limited to, theory and applications of data assimilation in the following discipline areas: synoptic-scale numerical weather prediction; convective-scale numerical weather prediction; ocean and coastal prediction; atmospheric chemistry, constituents and aerosols; land-surface and sea-ice modeling and data assimilation; atmosphere/ocean/land climate, coupling, processes and prediction; air quality; monitoring and understanding the coastal and marine environment; and ocean biology.

Presentations may emphasize either (1) the scientific problems of a particular discipline area for which data assimilation is brought to bear (especially for emerging applications); (2) the development of theory and/or techniques that may be discipline-specific but are core to the subject of data assimilation (for example the assimilation of surface data for the ocean, the assimilation of non-state variables such as precipitation, radar and remote-sensing data assimilation in general); or (3) the development of theory and/or techniques that may span disciplines (such as ensemble filtering and smoothing, 4D-Var, covariance modeling, predictability, sensitivity, targeted observations).

The DEADLINE DATE for submission of abstracts is 15 OCTOBER
2004.

It is anticipated that over half of the presentations will be by poster. Each poster presenter will be asked to give a one-minute oral introduction to his or her poster, using one slide.

Please refer to the Call for Abstracts on the Symposium website for detailed instructions on how to submit abstracts.

SUPPORT FOR RESEARCHERS FROM DEVELOPING COUNTRIES

Limited WMO funds are available to provide partial support to a few participants from developing countries who have provided high-quality short abstracts of their intended oral or poster presentations by the specified deadline of 15 October 2004. Requests for support, including a brief scientific CV and a letter of recommendation, should be sent to the Secretariat with a copy to the Chair of the IOC by 30 October 2004. The addresses to which requests for support should be sent are given below.

The Symposium will be held on the premises of Karolinum, the historical main building of Charles University in Prague. Accommodations will be arranged mostly at three-star hotels located in the town center and environs; other hotel categories will be available as well. Local organization is coordinated by the Czech Hydrometeorological Institute, Charles University and the Academy of Sciences of the Czech Republic.

ACCOMMODATIONS

To receive special discounted rates available only to Symposium participants, you must make hotel reservations through the travel agency "Agentura Carolina" located in Prague. Agentura Carolina will also handle social and tourist programs. Please watch the Symposium website for details.
