Re: vertical mixing story

Kate, Another idea (from Fei) may be to distribute the light at the surface layer over the mixed layer depth rather than as a function of Z. This could potentially smooth out the spikes that we see, without applying limiters, and provides some measure of vertical coupling for the biology which is ...

Re: rapid surface cooling by an hour after initialization

The bulk flux logic handling of humidity breaks in the high-latitudes. It gets confused between relative and specific humidity which up there will cause what you are seeing. Make sure you are indeed using the units you think you have.

The issue has to do with linked dynamic libraries. Ifort has specific ones it wants ahead of others. This is what fixes things: if !($?LD_LIBRARY_PATH) then setenv LD_LIBRARY_PATH /opt/intel/fc/10.1.012/lib else setenv LD_LIBRARY_PATH /opt/intel/fc/10.1.012/lib:${LD_LIBRARY_PATH} endif # DYLD ...

Well, I just installed the new ifort and when trying to compile netCDF
following Rob's environment suggestions I get:

checking if Fortran "byte" is C "signed char"... configure: error: Could not link conftestf.o and conftest.o

Any ideas?

None of the above is the real answer. All they are is a modification to the water column depth (for the geometry) and an upside down bottom drag for the boundary condition.

This is an option designed to typically deepen the mixed layer obtained by KPP. It is now a standard feature of the ocean model in CCSM at NCAR and also makes some physical sense. Kate Hedstrom implemented it last summer, but we never finished debugging it. It is not clear how much of a difference ...

ROMS 2.0 with Linux/PGI

I've been running a comibnations of ROMS 2.0/ RedHat Linux/PGI compilers/MPICH with no problems. Some issues can arise with local installations of any of the above packages (and also netCDF). Try plotting some of the output and see whether things are going bad near one of the processor boundaries ...

Just to expand on the counter argument... In a situation like the North American West Coast, in particular the Columbia river, putting all the flowin the top layer causes a plume to extend (many) hundreds of kilometers in to the Pacific, capping the surface with a fresh layer that shuts down any ...
